|Davis Bertans got injured in the last game of the season for Partizan and will be sorely missed by Latvia|
Young Latvian international Davis Bertans has torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and is expected to be out of action between six and nine months, consequently missing out on EuroBasket 2013.
The talented forward, who plays for newly crowned Serbian league champions Partizan mt:s Belgrade, suffered the injury during the final game of the season, in the fourth clash of the KLS Finals against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday.
Bertans had already been on the floor for 12 minutes when, during the second quarter of the encounter, he took the lane with the intention to drive to Red Star's basket but instead fell on the floor with an expression of intense pain in his face.
Partizan head coach Dusko Vujosecic immediately rushed on the court to console his player and his worried reaction left little doubt that the injury was visibly serious.
Bertans underwent medical tests in a clinic in Novi Sad on Thursday which confirmed the worst possible scenario.
Just hours before the diagnosis, Latvia head coach Ainars Bagatskis announced his 17-strong preliminary squad for September's EuroBasket and included the young forward, in the 'hope that he did not suffer serious damage in the last game, which he did not finish due to injury,' as he said.
Bertans, who turns 21 in November, made his debut with the senior national team already at EuroBasket 2011.
He was a staple in Latvia's qualifying campaign last summer, as he played 18.6 minutes per game and averaged 8.6 points and 4.4 rebounds a night to help his side punch their ticket to the EuroBasket in Slovenia.
Following the EuroBasket Qualification Round, the young Latvian assumed a key role at Partizan and averaged 9.8 points 2.8 rebounds in the ABA Adriatic League this season, as the Serbian powerhouse captured the title.
Latvia will do battle with Lithuania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, F.Y.R. of Macedonia and Montenegro in First Round Group B at the EuroBasket.
