Lipko: The official EuroBasket 2013 mascot

The public have chosen Lipko as the official mascot of EuroBasket 2013.

Following two weeks of online voting through the ┼Żurnal internet portal, Lipko, based on a traditional symbol of Slovenia, the linden tree, was the unanimous choice of the people, beating out Lupi the wolf, Jamko the olm, and Nenad the Carniolan bee.

Lipko, who was created by the Slovenian design studio, Studio Lutman, received 6095 of the 12106 votes cast by the public. Lupi was the second-most favoured option with 4813 votes, whilst Jamko received 669 votes and Bibi 529.

25 Slovenian design studios were invited to take part in the process of designing a mascot for EuroBasket 2013 with the Local Organising Committee selecting four of the eight received entrants to be voted upon by the public.

The name Lipko comes from the Slovene name for the linden tree - Lipa.

The leaf of the linden tree is an old symbol that unites Slovenian people. A linden tree was planted in Republic Square to celebrate Slovenia's independence and subsequently, linden trees can be found in main squares in towns across Slovenia.

In order to fulfil all requirements, the final version of Lipko that will be unveiled at the EuroBasket 2013 draw in Postojna on November 18, will differ slightly from the current version.
