Luxembourg Hosts Games of Small States

From Tuesday, 29 May until Sunday 2 June, Luxembourg plays host to the 15th European Games of the Small States with the basketball taking a prominent role.

The competition, which was inaugurated in 1981 and is open to all European countries with less than one million inhabitants, features ten different sports with basketball competed for by both men and women.

Both tournaments are played in a round-robin system with the team that tops the table on Sunday winning the trophy.

Four countries have registered in the women's tournament, with hosts Luxembourg being joined by Cyprus, Iceland and Malta.

On the opening day, Cyprus fell 65-48 to Luxembourg with the hosts, who were led by Christine Fisher's 13 points, taking a commanding lead at half-time thanks to a 15-5 second quarter.

In the men's tournament, EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round sides Iceland and Luxembourg are joined by Andorra, Cyprus and San Marino.

Iceland opened their campaign in style with a 94-53 win over San Marino, with Aegir Steinarsson pouring in 27 points, converting six of his nine three-point-shots.

In the second game of the day, Andorra faced the hosts who stormed out of the gates to take a 46-25 half-time lead.

Andorra surged back after the break, winning the third quarter 21-10 and also made a push to close the gap even further.

Luxembourg however got their confidence back and, in a high-scoring final frame, secured an 82-74 win.

The tournament is supported by 12 officials, five accompanying their respective national teams and seven neutral ones, as well as FIBA Europe Vice President John Goncalves of Gibraltar, who is the official FIBA Europe delegate.
