UMMC Finish Strong To Eliminate Gutsy Galatasaray

05 February 2010

Candace Parker and Cappie Pondexter combined for 29 points as 2009 EuroLeague Women runners-up UMMC Ekaterinburg finished strongly to grind out a 61-50 victory at gutsy Galatasaray and complete a 2-0 series victory.

The game was still delicately poised heading into the last three minutes with the home team pushing the Russian club hard and only one point behind at 49-50.

However just when it looked like the classy due of Sophia Young and Tamika Catchings might help to force a deciding game back in Russia, Ekaterinburg stepped on the pedal and slammed the door of opportunity firmly shut.

UMMC scored eleven of the last twelve points in the game to get themselves over the line and deny their hosts again with both teams having met in Turkey during the Qualifying Round.

In a real war of attrition with defence always the kingpin, Galatasaray started brightly but in a low scoring first half found themselves trailing 21-27.

Ekaterinburg always looked like pulling away throughout the game but to their credit, the home team didn't let that happen until that late run by the visitors.

Had they found any kind of outside game, Galatasaray might have been heading into a third game in the series but some awful three-point shooting made life tough as they nailed just one of eleven attempts all night.

Young and Catchings both harvested 15 points while for the victors, Pondexter claimed 12 points and Candace Parker top scored with 17.
