Both Italy and Greece, two of the teams that will compete in Group D at EuroBasket 2013, received bad news on Thursday night, but the biggest blow was reserved for the Azzurri.

"The athlete Daniel Hackett informed today [Thursday] FIP's national teams sector that he does not wish to participate in the activities with the senior national team in the preparations for EuroBasket 2013," the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) announced in a laconic press release.

No further reasons were given for this development by either FIP or the player, but Hackett had already hinted earlier at a possible absence from the EuroBasket, by means of a post on social network twitter.

"People are asking me, but at the moment I cannot guarantee my presence at the national team. Too many question marks, too little health," he tweeted on 12 July.

Hackett has been undergoing therapy throughout the summer to deal with an Achilles tendon injury and complained of pain in his foot as recently as two days before FIP's announcement.

The point guard had a fantastic end to the club season and led Montepaschi Siena to an improbable eighth consecutive Serie A league title, despite the fact the defending champions had to play without the home-court advantage during the entire play-offs.

The 25-year-old guard averaged eight points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game with Italy in last summer's EuroBasket Qualification Round.

Bourousis Sidelined Temporarily

Ioannis Bourousis (Greece)

Greece center Ioannis Bourousis has been diagnosed with a fractured rib and will have to abstain from practice for a yet unspecified period.

Bourousis took a knock during the Greek national team's Thursday training session and was taken to a hospital in Athens, where he underwent medical tests.

The 29-year-old big man will need to rest for a few days and then he will follow an individual training schedule, until the doctors give him the go ahead to re-join the team.

The medical team of the Greek federation however where quick to specify that his participation at the EuroBasket is not under question.

Greece and Italy were drawn in Group D together with Russia, Turkey, Finland and Sweden.
