|Leticia Romero combined with Ariadna Pujol for 19 points for Spain |
Spain eased their way into the second round of the U18 European Championship Women in Vinkovci after Leticia Romero and Ariadna Pujol inspired a 71-62 Group B win against Russia.
The duo both fired 19 points each to get their side a big victory in a highly entertaining contest against a Russian team who started proceedings brightly.
They moved 16-13 in front and were playing with real confidence, helped in particular by Daria Kolosovskaia, who eventually reaped a game-high 20 points.
But once Spain got their noses in front just a few minutes later, they never relinquished their lead - even if Russia did push them hard.
Still a one-shot game at 40-37 to Spain, but with Russia on a roll, the Spanish took the sting out of their opponents' revival with an ‘and-1' play by Maria Arrojo and then a three-ball by Yaiza Rodriguez.
It proved to be enough to give Spain just the kind of cushion they needed in the last quarter as Russia tried to make one final fight back.
However, there was no real support for the offensive production of Kolosovskaia, with Spain doing an excellent job in shackling the dangerous Anna Shchetina in the paint.
