A Referee Clinic took place in Norwegian capital Oslo over the weekend, with the support of FIBA Europe.

The two-day clinic concluded on Sunday, with a high interest by young as well as female referees.

FIBA Europe was represented by Victor Mas, Referee Instructor and member of the Technical Commission.

Mas was very satisfied with the clinic and the response of the participants.

Using teaching materials prepared by FIBA and FIBA Europe, he gave a series of lectures, taking a detailed look at specific situations on the court.

All lectures stressed the importance of communication between the referees and the application of unified criteria in difficult game situations.

The following topics were discussed in detail:

  • Post play situations, including the rights and obligations of both, offensive and defensive players
  • Behavior control of and communication with players and coaches
  • Unsportsmanlike fouls
  • Foul tactics and assessing their impact on the game
  • Flopping situations

In his final lecture, Mas explained the working methods and responsibilities of a Referees Department within a basketball organisation, presenting the Spanish Basketball Federation FEB as an example.

The Referee Clinic in Oslo was only one of a series of clinics to be held in September.

The FIBA Europe Referees Department is also supportive of clinics in Switzerland, Israel, Ireland, Bulgaria and F.Y.R. of Macedonia.
