Spanish basketball icon Pau Gasol is forcing everyone in Europe to play a waiting game after admitting he still doesn't know if he will play at the EuroBasket in Poland. National team coach Sergio Scariolo included him in his 12-man team on Monday but federation president Jose Luis Saez said "minor details" still needed to be sorted out before Gasol would be a confirmed participant for Spain. Gasol, who just won his first NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers in their 4-1 triumph over Orlando, held a press conference in Alicante on Thursday and was expected to announce definitively whether he would play or not but has instead left a big question mark over his presence in Poland. "I am awaiting certain conversations in order to say ‘yes' or ‘no'," he said. "This afternoon, I will speak to the Lakers and then to the federation. Once I do that, I will decide. The Lakers want me to rest after a long season that began with the Olympics, but it's true that I have felt better than last year when I finished burned out. "This is positive. The Lakers value it and my options of going (to Poland) could increase. I hope to continue in the national team because I've always had the will to compete." Gasol has this year spoken of his desire to win a gold medal at the EuroBasket - something he was denied two years ago when Spain lost to Russia in the final in Madrid. "I am an ambitious player and I hope to continue to fight to achieve successes and my aims," said Gasol, the MVP of the 2006 FIBA World Championship. "I just hope injuries respect me and that luck comes my way." Gasol has a promotional event on Friday and could then reveal if he is to play. |
