| 25.12.2009 Dariusz Maciejewski has been appointed as the new coach of the Poland women's national team.
Maciejewski, 45, has led AZS-PWSZ Gorzow since the 2004 campaign and also guided the Polish women at the World University Games in Izmir (2005), Bangkok (2007) and Belgrade (2009).
With Poland hosting EuroBasket Women in 2011, Maciejewski does not need to lead the team in qualifying but insists that next year will be a very important one for the national side.
"It will be a crucial year for our work," he said.
"We must use the fact that the Czech Republic will host the FIBA World Championship for Women and play the maximum number of games with the participants of this event.
"The possibility of confrontations with teams such as the USA, China, Australia and Russia, for example, would provide invaluable experience for building a team for the European Championship.
"I think that each of the participants in the World Championship should be interested in playing our team because of the proximity and the same time zone."
Poland failed to reach the Quarter-Finals at the EuroBasket in Latvia, which knocked them out of contention for a place in the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women.
Krzysztof Koziorowicz then stepped down from his position as the Poland women's coach following the national team's exit.
Maciejewski says the Poles need to have lofty aims.
"I think one has to put the bar high and be ambitious," he said on the Polish Basketball Federation website.
"The European Championships are in Poland in 2011, which guarantees us the right to a place in the tournament qualifiers for the Olympic Games in London in 2012.
"We must use the fact that we play at home. I dream of a medal and the players probably have similar desires." |
