French basketball fans are watching every step made by the men's team at the FIBA World Championship where Vincent Collet's side is gearing up for an Eight-Finals clash with hosts Turkey. | | Elodie Godin was hampered by an injury in Latvia last year but chipped in with 5 hugely important points in the final against Russia |
But those same fans have one eye on Lugo, Spain, because that's where the Pierre Vincent's team is preparing for the FIBA World Championship for Women. If their game against Belarus is anything to go by, France, who won the gold medal at last year's EuroBasket Women in Riga, are going to be tough opponents for Team USA, Greece and Senegal in Group B. Les Bleues routed Belarus 76-55 with a balanced attack. France stormed out to a 19-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and stretched that to 43-30 by half-time. They put the result beyond doubt in the third frame, outscoring Belarus 19-12 before claiming a 21-point triumph. Endene Miyem, Jennifer Digbeu, Elodie Godin and Marion Laborde all had nine points and Emmeline Ndongue contributed eight for France. Anatoli Buyalski's Belarus got 15 points from Anastasiya Verameyenka. Spain also won their warm-up game in Lugo against Greece. Jose Ignacio Hernandez's team beat Greece 80-39. Amaya Valdemoro led Spain with 14 points while Greece's Evina Maltsi had a game-high 16 in defeat. Spain coach Jose Ignacio Hernandez said: "Our defensive teamwork was of high standard, especially in the first quarter when we gave away two points and in the third only four. "We were able to control their top players, we ran, we got easy baskets and kept up our intensity. "Greece is a comfortable rival for us because it's the only rival in Europe that are smaller than us and in that sense, we had an advantage against them." Next up is France on Saturday. "France has very strong players and we expect a tough game," Hernandez said. All four teams will be at the FIBA World Championship in the Czech Republic, which tips off on September 23. |
