Olexandra Gorbunova put on an incredible performance in MKB Euroleasing Sopron’s 78-63 victory over Famila to earn Player of the Week honours.
The Ukrainian international scored 29 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead her team to their fifth victory in what was the final qualification round game of the EuroLeague 2005-2006 season.
The win was enough to give MKB fourth place in Group B and they will take on 2003 champions UMMC Ekaterinburg in the eighth-final play-offs.
Gorbunova did most of her damage in the second quarter, scoring 13 points while demonstrating her all-around offensive abilities.
Her points in the quarter came on two lay-ups, two jump shots from the perimeter, a three-point field goal and a pair of free throws.
It was a break-out game for the 19-year old forward. In her first nine games with MKB, Gorbunova was averaging just 3.3 points per game in limited playing time. Her 29 points Wednesday was one point shy of her total for the entire season.
Accolades are nothing new for Gorbunova. In 2004, she claimed the Most Valuable Player awards in both the European Championship Under-18 and Under-20 competitions and was selected EuroLeague Women Player of the Week back in November 2004.
