A mammoth third quarter saw Croatia race clear on their way to a 67-55 win over Estonia in Group B of the EuroBasket Women 2017 Qualifiers.
Turning Point: Estonia had started strong and led 30-19 on Laina Mesila-Kaarmann's jump-shot with 6:04 left in the first half. But Croatia responded with a 16-2 run which spanned half-time and put them up 42-37 on Shavonte Zellous' free throws early in the second half. In all, they would outscore hosts 29-7 in the third period as they built an insurmountable lead.
Stats Don't Lie: While Estonia finished the night with a better shooting percentage, Croatia attempted 60 shots from the field compared to 47 for the hosts, having enjoyed a 41-28 advantage on the glass to retain possession. Croatia had 20 offensive rebounds, compared to nine for Estonia.
Game Hero: Zellous struggled on her debut for the national team, scoring just six points in a loss against the Netherlands. However, she hit 9-of-11 free throws on her way to a game-high 21 points in Tallinn, leading Croatia to a first win in the EuroBasket Women 2017 Qualifiers.
Bottom Line: The two teams came into the game having lost their group openers so while Croatia can feel much better about themselves, Estonia need to find a spark soon.
