|Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych shakes hands with FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson |
On Friday FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson, accompanied by FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak, travelled to Kyiv, Ukraine, where they were hosted by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to discuss EuroBasket 2015.
The visit on Friday provided the chance for the two presidents to sit together and discuss the impending tournament which is now just a little over two years away.
It was the first official meeting between President Rafnsson and President Yanukovich.
High on the agenda of discussion topics was the development of new infrastructure in anticipation of hosting Europe's biggest basketball tournament.
It is intended that up to five new stadiums will be built as venues for the event, including in the venue of Friday's meeting, Kyiv; and Dnipropetrovsk, where President Yanukovych visited on Tuesday to officially break the first ground to signal the beginning of construction on a new stadium.
President Rafnsson and Novak were both impressed with the involvement President Yanukovych has taken towards EuroBasket 2015, including a hands on role as the head of the Coordinating Committee.
"There were a lot of positives to take from today's meeting," said Novak following the discussions with President Yanukovych. "We [myself and President Rafnsson] are very impressed by the involvement of President Yanukovych and the manner in which he is overseeing this project."
