Latvia grabbed an impressive win with a 65-56 victory over Sweden in their opening Group B match of the U16 European Championship Women.
Latvia started well and Marta Jancevska's post move put them 14-9 ahead at the end of the first quarter.
Paula Strautmane opened the second quarter with a strong drive and three-point play, and Sweden were finding it hard to get inside as Anna Dreimane proved an imposing presence, with two blocks in the quarter. But Fanny Waldling was able to end the half with a strong offensive rebound and putback to cut Latvia's lead to three.
The second half began with another strong drive from Paula Strautmane, but Sweden's long-range shooting helped them back into the game, Kristin Seman following a three-pointer with a great drive to move her team four points ahead.
The teams were locked together until a 6-0 fourth-quarter burst as Latvia got crucial defensive stops.
Fanny Hakansson scored a three-point play on a great spinning drive and Sweden employed a full-court press in one last attempt, but Kintija Kalnina's three-pointer sealed a great win for the Latvian team.
Paula Strautmane ended with 19 points and nine rebounds and younger sister Digna Strautmane notched a double-double (12 points and 11 rebounds), while Jancevska added 14 points.
