Italy celebrate their surprising quarter-final triumph over Turkey
Andrea La Torre even stands out when celebrating. The forward let it rain triples and finished with 28 points to go with his 11 rebounds and 5 assists

Italy will play for a medal at the U16 European Championship Men after knocking off Turkey in the quarter-finals.

Andrea La Torre poured in 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Davide Moretti scored 19 as Turkey struggled to deal with Italy's size inside and out.

La Torre hit four of six three-point attempts while also collecting five assists.

Furkan Korkmaz, who sat out Turkey's loss to Greece in the final game of the second round with a calf injury, returned to pour in 28 points but he could not find enough support to see the defending champions through to the next round.

It was a tight first half with the lead changing hands nine times, but Italy began to edge clear early in the third quarter, and led 53-45 when Lorenzo Bucarelli sank a big three-point shot.

Turkey were not going to go quietly, however, and back-to-back baskets from Korkmaz made it 55-52.
Italy continued to ease clear and La Torre put them 61-54 up early in the fourth quarter.

The tension remained high with Turkey close at hand, and four quick points from Enes Taskiran made it 65-63 with 5:58 left in the contest.

Again it was La Torre who eased Italian nerves, making a lay-up and then two free throws to restore a six-point edge, before Bucarelli split a pair at the line to make it 70-63 with 3:09 remaining.

Moretti's three then made it 73-65 with 2:24 to go.

Turkey were running out of time to make a run as La Torre drew an offensive foul from Baris Ulker and when the big number nine dropped another three with 96 seconds left Italy led 76-67.

La Torre and Moretti then made key free throws down the stretch before the party could start, Italy celebrating wildly at the buzzer.
