Denis Zakharov helped Russia seal victory with 8 points in the fourth quarter
Russia kept alive their chances of qualifying to the Second Round of the Sportland U20 European Championship with a 78-60 success over Israel on the third day of action in Group C.
This was Russia's first victory in three encounters while Israel have lost both of their first two games in the tournament.
The Russians grabbed the initiative right from tip-off and while the scores were tied momentarily early on, Israel started showing difficulties in keeping up with the pace already during the first quarter.
Russia finished the first half on an 8-0 run to go into the locker rooms with a comfortable 41-24 advantage.
Israel still had plenty of fight left in them and rode the hot hand of point guard Tom Maayan to outscore their opponents 21-16 in the third frame.
Denis Zakharov however scored eight of his game-high 20 points in the fourth period to ensure Russia would never face a real threat, with the gap ballooning to 19 points with 5:58 left to the final buzzer.
Alexander Zakharov followed in the footsteps of his namesake and contributed 14 points and five rebounds, while three more Russian players scored 10 points each.
For Israel, Igor Mayor collected 16 points, Maayan had 13 and Tomer Ginat registered a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
