Iceland: 24 Seconds With Jon Stefansson

10 May 2005

At just 22 years of age, Dynamo St Petersburg guard Jon Stefansson already has plenty of experience under his belt.

He has played in 2 of Europe's top leagues (Germany and Russia), served a stint in the NBA (with the Dallas Mavericks) and won the 2005 FIBA Europe League title with Dynamo St Petersburg.

We sat down with Stefansson recently at the FIBA Europe League All Star Day, where he was selected as a member of the European team, for this quick interview.

What is your first sporting memory?
Stefansson: I think playing football when I was little.

What did you do on your last day off?
Stefansson: It was in Moscow that I last had a day off, so I walked around Moscow, did a little shopping. The weather was nice, around 15 degrees, so I was just walking around downtown Moscow.

How many languages do you speak?
Stefansson:I speak English, Icelandic, a little bit of Danish and that’s about it.

What’s the best thing about being a professional basketball player?
Stefansson: Being able to work with what you love to do.

Which web site do you surf the most often?
Stefansson:, but this year a lot.

Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson?
Stefansson: Jordan. All time favourite.

Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
Stefansson: Not really, I’ve never been into that stuff. Actually, I have to get a nap. If I don’t get a nap, I’m worried about being tired. Usually I try to sleep for 1 hour and a half, but usually it ends up being around 3 hours (laughs). That’s easy for me, I’m a sleeper..

Whats the best dunk you ever saw?
Stefansson: Let me think. I would say last year when Kevin Garnett dunked on Dirk Nowitzki when I was with the Mavericks.

If you could change any rule in basketball, what would it be?
Stefansson: (Stefansson thinks for several seconds, before turning to All Star team-mate Kaspars Kambala to ask the same question. Kambala answers immediately that he would change the travelling rule, to relax the number of calls, especially when players go to the basket. He then demonstrates his ability to shoot a hook shot off his right or left foot, and expresses his displeasure at being called for a violation in a recent game with this very same move). Can we come back to that question later?

What was the last film you saw?
Stefansson: Hostage, with Bruce Willis.

After exchanging pleasantries and saying goodbye, Stefansson is just about to leave the gym when he answers the rule change question and shouts out, "You know what, I wouldn’t change anything."
