Great Britain concluded a long recruitment process on Wednesday by announcing that Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Joe Prunty will steer the national team at September's EuroBasket 2013 as their head coach.

The American tactician joined the San Antonio Spurs' coaching staff in 1996 and later worked for the Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trail Blazers before taking on the role of Byron Scott's assistant at Cleveland in 2010.

"It is truly an honour to be appointed as Head Coach of the Great Britain Men's National Team," Prunty said in a statement on the website of the British federation.

"Every person I have spoken with has shown tremendous passion and enthusiasm for the programme.

"This is an important time for GB Basketball and the opportunity for all of us is extremely exciting heading into EuroBasket 2013."

"I am grateful to all the people involved who have entrusted me with this position.

"I am looking forward to working with the players, coaches, and staff members who comprise the GB family," Prunty added.

The head coaching position had been vacant since Christopher Finch, who had been handed the reins of the team in the run up to EuroBasket 2009, stepped down after the London Olympics.

Great Britain will make their third consecutive EuroBasket appearance in Slovenia, after taking 13th place at both the 2009 and 2011 editions of the tournament and finishing in ninth at the London Games last summer in front of their home fans.

The British were drawn in First Round Group A at EuroBasket 2013 and will have have to do battle against Israel, Belgium, Ukraine, France and Germany for a top-three finish that leads to the second phase of the competition.
