|Ornella Bankole pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for France|
France won their opening game of the U16 European Championship Women, defying a fourth-quarter surge from the Czech Republic to claim a 58-50 victory.
It gives the French team a two-game winning streak over their Czech counterparts, having won an overtime thriller to claim 5th place at last year's tournament.
This year's game didn't look as if it would be so close as France established an early lead, with Ana Tadic's basket capping a 10-0 run which moved the French team 21-7 ahead in the second quarter.
The lead swelled to 17 points early in the second half as Camille Lenglet hit a three-pointer, but the Czech Republic battled back, holding France to two points in the opening four minutes of the final quarter.
Michaela Matuskova's steal and fast break cut the lead to six with 1:34 remaining, but they were unable to get any closer as France survived.
Tadic led France with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Alexia Chartereau contributed 11 points. Tereza Sipova led the Czech team with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
