|Derek Raivio led Okapi Aalstar with 29 points as they claimed their first victory of the season following an added period|
Okapi Aalstar needed overtime to register their first win in Group E of EuroChallenge as they edged out Gasterra Flames Groningen 83-82.
Christopher Young scored what proved the decisive points from the free throw line but they still had 47 seconds left to play, surviving a missed lay-up from Cashmere Wright before Derek Raivio was off-target with a late attempt to pad the winning margin.
Okapi led for more than 38 of the 45 minutes but found themselves playing overtime after Quentin Pryor nailed a three-pointer 16 seconds from time to tie it at 76, and they then slipped behind early in the extra period before a Da'Sean Butler three-pointer turned the tide.
Okapi looked to be cruising after a 10-0 run early in the second half powered them into a 48-36 lead on a Raivio jump shot, but Groningen kept coming back.
They should have been out of it when Raivio completed a three-point play from the line to go 69-61 up, but they responded with eight straight, highlighted by a three from Pryor, to tie it 2:46 from time.
Arvin Slagter's free throws edged them into a rare lead, 71-70 with 1:37 to go, but Raivio reversed it and two more from Lee Cummard had Okapi up by three with 25 seconds left before Pryor forced overtime.
Groningen struck first in the extra period, but after Raivio tied it for a second time Okapi capitalised on a Bekkering miss to take the lead on Butler's three.
Wright and Slagter hit back-to-back shots to edged Groningen in front 82-81, but after Young's free throws, Wright missed the late chance to win it.
Raivio poured in 29 points to lead Okapi with Butler adding 16.
Jeffrey Robinson had 21 points and nine rebounds for Groningen, with Bekkering adding 17 and Pryor 12.
