Georgios Diamantakos sunk the winning basket for Greece who secured their first win on Saturday
A game-winning hook shot by center Georgios Diamantakos enabled Greece to claim its first win in their final First Round game at the U18 European Championship on Saturday.
Unable to advance to the Second Round, Diamantakos helped Greece to a much belated win following heartbreaking one-point losses to the Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The gradual offensive progression of Diamantakos was on full display Saturday afternoon as the big center played his most complete game, dominating the contest with a 33-point, 15-rebound performance.
Russia attempted to return from what would have been a third straight comeback victory to tie the game with under a minute remaining after trailing by double-digits in the third term, but Diamantakos capped off his perfect night with a hook from the right block before a steal by Dimitrios Stamatis on the ensuing inbound pass sealed the victory.
Diamantakos also converted 9-of-10 free throws and Stamatis added 14 points for Greece.
Alexander Martynov and Viacheslav Fedorchenko were again Russia's top players, scoring 17 points each.
