European heavyweights France and Spain traded blows in a warm-up tournament for the FIBA World Championship for Women in Lugo, Spain.

Pierre Vincent's Les Bleues went on an 18-5 run in the fourth quarter and prevailed, 65-59.

Emilie Gomis sparked the French with 13 points while Sandrine Gruda had 12.

Spain's Amaya Valdemoro had a game-high 17 points.

Before the French game, Spain coach Jose Ignacio Hernandez released Blanca Marcos and Maria Pina from national team duty, leaving him with 13 players.

The naturalized star from Halcon Avenida, Sancho Lyttle, has yet to arrive from the WNBA where she is in the play-offs with the Atlanta Dream.

Despite losing to France, results overall meant that Spain won the tournament.

Laia Palau hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat Belarus 68-65 and Spain also defeated Greece 80-39.

The French hammered Belarus 76-55 but suffered a 70-58 defeat to Greece, one of their Group B opponents in Ostrava later this month.

"I am happy with the tournament, not just because of the result but because we are slowly finding our identity," Hernandez said.
