Approximately 700 Slovenian volunteers gathered at Stozice Arena, Ljubljana on Saturday for a first meeting ahead of EuroBasket 2013.
The volunteers got a glimpse of the venue for the Second and Final Round and their place of work, as they will assist in the organisation of the EuroBasket, one of the biggest sporting events in Slovenian history.
After a presentation by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) on the organisational part of the tournament and the areas of voluntary work, the volunteers were actively challenged in a contest, with mascot Lipko and Marko Milic picking the winner.
Milic, the ambassador of volunteers at EuroBasket 2013 is convinced that his protégés will do their best come September.
"We have to join the forces and prove to everyone that not only our national team, which is one of the best in Europe, can achieve an excellent result at the EuroBasket, but that Slovenians have a big heart and a sense of humour."
The LOC was especially pleased with the high number of educated young people applying for a volunteer position.
"Volunteers are extremely important for an event such as EuroBasket, because without you its organisation would not be possible," Ales Kriznar, Director of EuroBasket 2013, addressed the participants.
"We are all aware that this is the biggest event in the history of independent Slovenia and that is why we are so happy to see that you responded so well and are prepared to invest your time, willingness, and energy at EuroBasket."
The next meeting for all volunteers who could not attend on Saturday is scheduled for 15 June.
