Youngest Ever Germany At EuroBasket

EUROBASKET 2013

8. Heiko Schaffartzik (Germany)
Heiko Schaffartzik will be the veteran on a new-look German squad

The 29-year-old point guard Heiko Schaffartzik is the eldest player on the 17-strong preliminary squad for EuroBasket 2013 that Germany head coach Frank Menz announced on Tuesday.

As expected, superstar Dirk Nowitzki, who made his last bow with the national team at EuroBasket 2011, is not included on the list.

Likewise, guard Steffen Hamann, who announced his retirement from international duty earlier in June and power forward Tim Ohlbrecht, who stated he would not play for the national team this summer, are also not part of Menz's plans for the upcoming EuroBasket.

A minor surprise however is the absence of power forward Jan-Hendrik Jagla who had spent every summer in a Germany jersey uninterruptedly since the World Championship 2006, having made his debut as a senior international in 2005.

Jagla averaged 9.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in last summer's Qualification Round, as the veteran on the new-look German side that completed an excellent campaign to punch their ticker to the EuroBasket.

According to reports in the country, the 31-year-old forward's career with the national team is not over, but he needed to take some well-deserved rest this summer to recover from minor injuries and fatigue accumulated throughout the season.

Germany's training camp gets under way already on 8 July but coach Menz will need to modify somewhat the first stage of preparations, as two scheduled warm-up games against Luxembourg have been cancelled.

Small forward Elias Harris and the 19-year-old Dennis Schröder, who has not played for the senior German team yet, are not included on the preliminary squad but they might join preparations at a later stage.

Both promising talents hope to be drafted in the NBA in late June and plan to play in the summer league on the other side of the Atlantic throughout July.

Germany were drawn in First Round Group A at EuroBasket 2013 and will do battle for a top-three finish against Great Britain, Israel, France, Ukraine and Belgium.

Preliminary Squad: Philipp Neumann, Karsten Tadda, Maik Zirbes, Philipp Schwethelm, Per Günther, Bastian Doreth, Andreas Seiferth, Robin Benzing, Heiko Schaffartzik, Philip Zwiener, Nicolai Simon, Johannes Lischka, Alex King, Tibor Pleiß, Niels Giffey, Patrick Heckmann and Lucca Staiger.
