Austrian international Rasid Mahalbasic has joined the already formidable frontcourt of EuroChallenge club BC Astana, the Kazakhstan champions announced officially on Friday.
Mahalbasic is currently on national team duty with Austria and, following the first two days of action, he is among the highest-rated players in the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round with 14 points, nine rebounds and two assists per game for an average efficiency index rating of 23.
The exact duration and other terms of the contract between Astana and the 24-year-old Austrian center have not been announced yet.
Mahalbasic will arrive at Astana after an excellent season at Czech champions CEZ Basketball Nymburk, with whom he averaged 11.3 points on 60.6% shooting and 6.2 rebounds per contest, in his 18 games in the Eurocup.
The young center also contributed 11.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in the VTB United League, a competition he will return to in the new season, in an Astana jersey.
Mahalbasic will join forces in the Astana frontline with two more newly-arrived players, who signed with the club earlier in the summer.
The first is veteran American-born power forward Nick Caner-Medley, who is coming off an outstanding year in the Turkish Ailrines Euroleague and the Spanish Liga Endesa with Unicaja Malaga.
The other is Croatian 29-year-old center Luksa Andric, who spent last season at Turk Telekom Ankara and averaged 11 points and 3.9 rebounds in the BEKO TBL.
Astana are coached by former Crvena Zvezda Belgrade, Spartak Saint Petersburg and Zalgiris Kaunas boss Aleksandar Trifunovic, while their president is Valeri Tikhonenko, a member of the legendary Soviet Union national team of the 1980's.
The Kazakhstan champions, who are gearing up for their fourth consecutive VTB League season, are to make their maiden appearance in a European club competition when they step out at home against CSM Oradea, in the premiere of EuroChallenge Group D action on 4 November.
