EuroBasket Qualification Overview

Daniel Hackett and Italy have already secured a place at EuroBasket 2013 but they are still chasing the best possible ranking

Slowly but surely, the field at next year's EuroBasket is being filled out.

Spain, France, Russia, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Lithuania, Greece, Slovenia and Olympics hosts Great Britain already had their places in the 24-team event secured after last year's EuroBasket.

Several other teams have booked their spots by clinching top-two finishes during the first eight game days in this summer's six Qualification Round groups.

Montenegro, Italy, Croatia and Ukraine earned berths on Sunday and then on Wednesday, Poland, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic and Germany gained entry to the Final Round in Slovenia.

That leaves seven places still up for grabs in the Qualification Round, with games on Saturday and Tuesday.

Not only do the top two teams in each group advance to Slovenia, but the four best third-place teams.

The first criteria to be used to determine order of finish between the teams that finish third in their respective groups, will be Win/Loss percentage.

Should this be the same, the next criteria is the goal average (points scored/points conceded) for teams.

It's also worth remembering that not only are the final seven berths for Slovenia at stake, but also the ranking for the Final Round.

So every result counts, even to those who have already qualifed, as it affects a team's win/loss percentage and therefore, their seeding in the EuroBasket Draw.

A team could finish first in a group, yet still end up with a lower ranking for the Final Round next summer than a side that finished second in another, yet had a better win/loss percentage.

As many as three tickets to EuroBasket 2013 can be handed out on Saturday, while four more teams could lay the ground for clinching qualification on the final day by winning and, in some cases, also winning big so that they can improve their goal average if the best they can aim for is a third-place finish.
