EUROBASKET WOMEN 2013
|An ACL injury means Sabine Niedola will not play her fourth EuroBasket Women tournament for Latvia|
An already threadbare Latvian frontcourt has been left decimated after it was revealed Sabine Niedola will be out of action for six months with a torn ACL.
The forward had been hoping to participate at her third EuroBasket Women tournament, but she won't be heading to France next month, as Latvia sustained a fresh hammer-blow to their prospects pf making the second phase of the competition.
Niedola sustained the injury playing against Belarus in a preparation game in the Lithuanian city of Alytus, although the player explained to sportacentrs.com that it was not immediately clear how serious it was.
"I passed to make the shot and I received the injury, most likely when coming down, but there was not unbearable pain at the time of the fall," said the 23-year-old.
"It ached a little, then quickly passed and I was able to jog back and forwards. Now I can even walk again."
However, despite no significant swelling, tests confirmed an ACL tear in the left knee and whilst not considered to be the worst kind of this injury, it is still likely to keep Niedola out of action for the remainder of the calendar year.
Head coach Aigars Nerips has watched his frontline slowly disintegrate after the retirement of both Ieva Kublina and Zane Tamane, followed by a shoulder injury to Aija Putnina who underwent surgery which will keep her from lining up in Trelaze.
It means he will now have to consider wrapping up both Liene Jansone and Aija Brumermane in cotton wool during the remainder of his preparation programme as he fears being left with no senior frontcourt players.
Latvia will face France, Great Britain and Serbia in Group C.
