SportForum - a panel group focusing on different elements of EuroBasket 2013 - met in Ljubljana on Wednesday, to discuss the impact of the event on the Slovenian economy and opportunities for further development of the economic sector.
The speakers at the forum were the Secretary General of Slovenian Basketball Federation Iztok Rems; Deputy Director of the Slovenian Government Communication Office Boštjan Lajovic; President and General Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, Samo Hribar Milič; Postojna Cave Board President Marjan Batagelj; and State Secretary of the Slovenian Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, Aljuš Petrinač.
A key point to come out of the discussions was Iztok Rems announcing that in August there will be another major event to take place in Postojna Cave, on a similar scale to the EuroBasket 2013 draw, which also took place in the famous location. However, at this stage, further details are being kept under wraps.
"EuroBasket is an ideal opportunity to show not only ourselves, but foreigners too, that we are capable of achieving big things despite the hard economic situation," said Boštjan Lajovic during the course of the round table.
Samo Hribar Milič added to the sentiments of Lajovic, reminding those present of the trickle down effects of hosting EuroBasket 2013.
"Every event, that can raise the visibility of Slovenia directly or indirectly brings more jobs and fosters employment. In the end, the owners of companies have bigger profits and that is what makes the world spin around."
Marjan Batagelj talked directly of the raised ambitions of the Slovenian tourism industry who are gearing up for an influx of tourists: "We have set a goal to have 4,000 visitors more than usual in September. But even if the number is smaller, we won't be disappointed, because it's a process of brand building, which lasts for several years."
