Pau Gasol Has Finger-Op After Training Injury

11 August 2009

Spain have lost star Pau Gasol for up to three weeks to a finger injury.

The Los Angeles Lakers seven-footer suffered ligament damage to the index finger on his left hand in training on Monday in Cádiz and was taken immediately to hospital in Seville where he was operated on.

It's unclear if Gasol will fully recover in time to play at the EuroBasket, which tips off in less than a month in Poland.

Gasol, just a couple of months removed from winning his first NBA crown, isn't expected back on court for nearly three weeks.

"After 20 days, he will be able to start training with the ball with protection (on the finger)," a statement on the FEB said.

Spain are in Group C and their first game is on September 7 against Serbia.
