|Iris Junio and her team-mates put shackles on the Bulgarian offence |
Hosts Bulgaria face a difficult situation at the U16 European Championship Women as defending champions Spain overwhelmed them 69-36 in Group A action in Varna.
It was always going to be a tough task for the Bulgarian team against the famous Spanish programme which has won gold in seven of the last nine tournaments at this level.
Bulgaria started well but Spain ended the first quarter with a 9-0 run and never looked back.
Spain went 35-12 in the next two quarters as they surged clear behind multiple steals and blocked shots.
The Spanish team also displayed their strength in depth as all players scored and had at least 10 minutes on the court.
Angela Salvadores led the group with 12 points and added 3 steals, while Iris Junio had five steals and Laia Raventos contributed four steals too.
Debora Filipova led the Bulgarian team again with 15 points, but they will need an impressive win against Croatia on Saturday to avoid a relegation fight.
