There was no shock for home fans to savour at the U18 European Championship Women in Vinkovci after a slick Spanish team made an early statement of their podium intent with an 80-48 victory against Croatia.
Spain were generally rampant from tip to buzzer and ruthlessly highlighted the difference in quality between the teams early by pouring in 27 points in the opening ten minutes.
With Croatia left reeling, they did at least finally find their feet and obtain some kind of foothold in the contest with an improved second period - although they still trailed 40-26.
Having given a full demonstration of their offensive prowess, Spain magnified their defensive capabilities in the second half, holding Croatia to 12 points in 16 minutes.
The Croatians melted under the defensive pressure and committed 29 turnovers as Leticia Romero enjoyed seizing five steals to go with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Ariadna Pujol added 17 points and six boards, whilst Inja Butina had a creditable 18 points for Croatia who have a great chance to bounce back against England on day two.
