Ukraine have closed out day one action at the U16 European Championship Men in style, knocking over Russia 87-63.

Running out to a 22-point lead midway through the third quarter, Ukraine were given some cause for concern when starting point guard Maksym Miroshnychenko had to be assisted from the court with an ankle injury.

With Ukraine missing their influential guard, a slight window of opportunity was opened for Russia who scored eight unanswered points to bring the deficit back to 11 points.

But with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, the wind was knocked out of Russia's sails and the momentum was handed back to Ukraine going into the final frame.

Ukrainian Oleksandr Kobets lead all scoring with 21 points. Yevgen Balaban and Mykhailiuk chipped in with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Aleksandr Zuev topped scoring for Russia with 13 points.

In day two action Ukraine meet hosts Latvia, whilst Russia take on Spain.
