Spain Hold Off Ukraine to Stay Perfect

Carlos Martinez sealed the win for Spain with 3 free-throws in the final 14 seconds

Spain have held on at the depth to defeat Ukraine 73-69 and enter the second round of the Dadu U16 European Championship Men undefeated.

In the second see-sawing game of the day in Ventspils, it was the calmness shown by the young Spaniards at the free-throw line that proved the difference as Diego Ocampo's team converted 26-of-33 compared to Ukraine who only made 13-of-26.

Struggling throughout the opening three quarters to hit a three, Ukraine made six late in the piece to keep the pressure on the Spanish.

But Marc Garcia and David Martinez stepped up for the Spaniards, combining for 16 last quarter points to assure Spain of the victory.

Garcia starred off the bench for Spain, scoring 20 points. Martinez ended up with 16 and eight rebounds.

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk lead Ukraine with 16 points.
