Lithuania have survived a late scare, holding on to defeat Slovenia 82-76 in their opening game at the U16 European Championship Men.
Leading by 14 points with five-and-a-half minutes remaining, Lithuania looked set to send the partisan crowd home with smiles on their faces.
But Matej Kavas began to cause some stress for the hosts, sinking a three-pointer to spur a 7-0 run and bring his team within seven points with just under three minutes to play.
However, Lithuania were able to regain their composure, clinging on for a six-point win.
Kavas ended the game with 18 points, 16 of which came in the final frame.
Domantas Sabonis, son of European legend Arvydas, stood out for Lithuania with 22 points and nine rebounds. Antanas Krimelis chipped in with 17 and Tautvydas Paliukenas picked up 14.
A win over the winless Serbia tomorrow will punch Lithuania's ticket to the next round whilst Slovenia face a more difficult hurdle when they take on an impressive looking German side.
