EuroLeague Women All-Star Game Voting Opens

FIBA Europe announces the opening of the public voting for the EuroLeague Women All-Star Game 2010, to take place on 9th March in Gdynia, Poland.

Taking place on the day after International Women's Day, the All-Star Game 2010 will feature a match-up between Europe and The Rest of the World with fans selecting the starting five for each team.

EuroCup Women Sixteenth-Final Pairings Set

The EuroCup Women Preliminary Round wrapped up on Thursday, with Lattes Montpellier advancing to the Sixteenth Finals as the top seed on a perfect 6-0 record.

The French side will now face Russian club Spartak Noginsk, the final team to slip into the last 32 of the competition without winning a game.
European Team Sports Association (ETS) Is Born

The major European team sports today formed their own team - by creating an association to promote, develop and represent the interests of European team sport.  The association will also further increase the information exchange that has taken place informally over recent years.

Furthermore, the European Team Sports of basketball (FIBA Europe), handball (EHF), football (UEFA), ice hockey (IIHF), rugby (FIRA-AER) and volleyball (CEV) have issued the following joint statement today with respect to the EU Lisbon Treaty which recently came into force and, in particular, Article 165 that recognises, inter alia, the "specific nature of sport".

FIBA Europe Player Of The Year Award Nominees Announced

FIBA Europe has announced the nominees for its annual Player of the Year awards for 2009.

Awards will be given in four different categories: Men, Young Men, Women and Young Women.

On 14 November 2009 FIBA Europe officially opened their new headquarters in Munich, Germany.

Among the dignitaries on hand for the event was Munich mayor Christian Ude who addressed those in attendance.

14 November 2009 will go down as a banner day in the history of FIBA Europe, as the governing body for basketball in Europe officially opened their new headquarters in Munich, Germany.

Munich Mayor Christian Ude and FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos  were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony at Ismaningerstrasse 21 in Munich's exclusive Bogenhausen district.

Special Olympics European Basketball Week 2009 to Encourage Unity

For the sixth consecutive year FIBA Europe has endorsed Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia's sixth annual Special Olympics European Basketball Week to be held 28 November- 6 December 2009 across the region. 

Basketball Week is expected to involve 15,000 basketball players with intellectual disabilities from 30 countries in a wide range of activities.

FIBA Europe And Eurosport 2 Announce Continuing Cooperation

For the second straight season fans of women's basketball across Europe and the globe will have the chance to see the world's best teams and players in the comfort of their own living rooms.

FIBA Europe announced on Tuesday that sports cable giant Eurosport 2 will broadcast live or on delay one EuroLeague Women game per week this season, including the Play-Offs and the Final Four which will take place 9th to 11th April, 2010.

Energa Torun To Fill Vacant EuroCup Women Spot
FIBA Europe has announced that the Polish club Energa Torun will take the place vacated by Wisła Can-Pack in the EuroCup Women 2009-2010 season.

Wisła Can-Pack have previously accepted an invitation to replace CSKA Moscow in the EuroLeague Women.

FIBA Europe has announced that the Polish club Wisła Can-Pack will replace CSKA Moscow in the EuroLeague Women 2009-2010 season.

The Russian club CSKA Moscow have declined their participation in Europe's top basketball competition for women's clubs basketball due to financial problems.

FIBA Europe, FIBA Join With UN In Declaration For Road Safety
In a Declaration for Road Safety signed today during the EuroBasket 2009, FIBA Europe and FIBA joined the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure, the Polish Ministry of Sport and Tourism and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in a plea to respect road traffic rules.
EuroBasket Division B Promotion Round Match-Ups Set

Four teams remain in the hunt for a ticket to the men's EuroBasket 2011 Division A, after the conclusion of the EuroBasket 2009 Division B Qualifying Round, Saturday.

In the final stage of Division B play, the Promotion Round, Montenegro will meet Sweden while Georgia will play against Belarus.

Lithuania Pass First Test With Flying Colors

FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos was on hand in Kaunas Sunday for the finals of the Omnitel U16 European Championship Men, offering him an opportunity to see the progress being made ahead of EuroBasket 2011, which will take place in Lithuania.

"From the very beginning I would like to make it clear that I am very impressed with the level of organization and the level of the arena," said Vassilakopoulos.

Gasol, Rubio Presented With Player Of The Year Awards

On Thursday Spain introduced the 2009 edition of their national team to the public, and began by honoring two of Europe's brightest stars.

FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin was on hand to present Center Pau Gasol and guard Ricky Rubio with the 2008 FIBA Europe Player of the Year and Young Men's Player of the Year Awards respectively.

EuroLeague And EuroCup Women Groups Drawn

The 2009-10 women's club competition season officially opened on Tuesday, July 21, with the draws for EuroLeague Women and EuroCup Women being held in Freising, near Munich, Germany.

Women's European Club Competitions Draw Set For July 21
FIBA Europe announces that the draw for the FIBA Europe EuroLeague Women and the EuroCup Women 2009-10 season will take place in Munich/Freising, July 21.

The draw will begin at 13:30 CET at the Marriott Hotel, Freising. EuroCup Women will be drawn first, followed by EuroLeague Women.

Draws For Men's European Club Competitions Set for July 8
The first events of the new basketball season, the 2009-10 Euroleague, Eurocup and EuroChallenge Draws, will be held on Wednesday, July 8 in Barcelona, Spain.

Following last season's collaboration on the same events, the 2009-10 draws of the FIBA Europe, Euroleague Basketball and ULEB competitions will be held and organized together.

Lejade Honoured At General Assembly
Last weekend's meeting of the FIBA Europe General Assembly in Cannes, France was an opportunity to honour one of European basketball's most dedicated officials as Bernard Lejade of France received the title of Honorary Member of FIBA Europe.

Mieszko, The Bison, Chosen As Mascot Of EuroBasket 2009
The Polish Basketball Federation and the Local Organising Committee of EuroBasket 2009 announced at a press conference in Warsaw Monday, that they have chosen the European bison, as the official mascot of the EuroBasket 2009 in Poland.

The European bison (Żubr in Polish) is the biggest wild animal to be found in Poland's forests.

With the first day of EuroBasket 2009 now less than five months away FIBA Europe and the Polish Basketball Federation have announced the beginning of ticket sales for Europe's premier basketball event.

Salamanca To Host EuroLeague Women Final Four

FIBA Europe announced on Monday that the 2009 EuroLeague Women Final Four will be held in Salamanca, Spain, home of Final Four participants Halcon Avenida.

The event will kick off on Friday, 3rd April with the Semi-Finals pitting the hosts against Hungarian side MKB Euroleasing and defending champions Spartak Moscow Region taking on Russian rivals UMMC Ekaterinburg.

The seminar focused on a number of projects which aim to assist the national federations in reaching their full potential.
Digital Scoresheet Approved For Use

Following the recent meeting of the FIBA Technical Commission, it has been decided that the FIBA Europe Digital Score Sheet may be used by organisers of competitions if they wish to do so in future.

FIBA Europe's Miguel Betancor who led the team that designed and developed the Digital Score Sheet commented, "This project was introduced to support all officials in their job; referees, commissioners and table officials."

Seminar To Feature Presentation On Lithuanian Youth Success

FIBA Europe will hold its second seminar for national federations, in Freising, Germany, on Saturday, 21st February 2009.

The seminar, which is organized in conjunction with the meeting of the Secretary Generals, will be attended by most of FIBA Europe's member federations. The event will include presentations, workshops and open discussions on various subjects.

FIBA Europe, FIBA and Euroleague Basketball are proud to announce the completion of a unified statistical criteria for basketball competitions.

All three organisations have been working together from the beginning of 2008 to update the existing Statistics Manual to help improve the sport of basketball worldwide.

Hapoel Awarded Game Against Olympia
The EuroChallenge game between Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem and Olympia Athienitis was not played in Jerusalem tonight after the refusal of the visiting club to travel to Israel.

According to the FIBA Europe club competitions' regulations the game is awarded to Hapoel with a score of 20-0 and Olympia receives zero (0) points for this particular game in the group classification.

FIBA Europe Mourns Passing Of Ieuan Jones
FIBA Europe was sad to learn of the passing of Ieuan Jones on 24 December, Chairman of Wales Basketball, Director with the British Basketball Federation, and past Vice Chairman and founder member of British Police Basketball.

Born in 1940, Ieuan's considerable knowledge of basketball at all levels, his experience of previous British programmes, and his strong support as a Director within the British Federation made him a significant contributor to the current successful British structure.
