FIBA Europe Cup Women Final Four Pope Tribute

03 April 2005

The 4 teams at the FIBA Europe Cup Women Final Four in Naples, Italy paid homage to Pope John Paul II in a ceremony at today’s final.

All 48 players took to the court for a common prayer in memory of the Pope who passed away on Saturday.

Players from Fenerbahce Istanbul (TUR), ZKK Zagreb (CRO), Phard Napoli (ITA) and Anda Ramat Hasharon (ISR) held hands in a circle, each holding a lily. A special tribute was read by a speaker to the crowd of 3,500 before the tip-off of the final Phard Napoli vs. Fenerbahce Istanbul.

“The Pope spent a great deal of his time working to unite religions,” said FIBA Europe Executive Director Nar Zanolin.

“Sport has the power to bring people together and we felt that this tribute, featuring teams and players from different countries and religious beliefs, was a fitting way to honour a leader whose teaching had a great effect on the life of millions.”
