Israel returned home from the Eural Trans Gas European Championship for U20 Men this week to a hero’s welcome. 250,000 fans in Israel had tuned in to watch their country’s remarkable run to the Final live on Israel’s Sports Channel. The Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final were broadcast live, and the final gained a 8.3% audience share.
This year television viewers from all around Europe have been able to catch action from several of FIBA Europe’s youth tournaments.
Games from the U20 Championship for Men were broadcast in Czech Republic, Lithunia and Israel.
At the European Championship for U18 Men, held in Zaragoza Spain the Final between home side and Turkey attracted 500,000 viewers (a 5% audience share) in a live broadcast on a Sunday night. That game, along with the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals, went out on Spanish national channel TVE.
For those who were not able to watch on television, for the first time ever, video broadcasts of selected games were available on fibaeurope.com. The Final was again shown live.
“The amount of television coverage we have and the audience figures are definitely encouraging,” commented FIBA Europe Executive Director Nar Zanolin.
“The web broadcasts for the U18s was a first for us. Two days after the Final was over, over 3000 users had downloaded the 5 games available. This is another great way for us to promote basketball.”
