FIBA Europe would like to officially announce Ilona Korstin as the face of the Year of Women’s Basketball campaign.
The 25-year old Korstin is the captain of EuroLeague Women champions BC Volgaburmash Samara and the Russian women’s national team, bronze medallists at the 2004 Olympics and silver-medal winners at EuroBasket Women 2005.
“I think it’s a great idea to have this year of women’s basketball,” said Korstin.
“First of all I was surprised to be asked be the face of this campaign, and after very happy because it is an honour to represent women’s basketball,” she added.
“We’re absolutely delighted that Ilona has agreed to work with us on this project,” added Year of Women’s Basketball Project Manager Esther Wender.
“She is a great representative of the women’s game as a young player who despite her age has already accomplished a great deal. We will be working with her very closely over the next few months on all of our initiatives in the Year of Women’s Basketball.”
“I certainly couldn’t think of anyone more suited to be the public image of our drive to promote women’s basketball,” added FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos.
“Ilona is a credit to our sport and I hope that together we can really focus on the women’s game in the next 18 months and beyond.”
The Year of Women’s Basketball is a prestigious initiative by FIBA Europe and its member federations to bring focus to women’s basketball in order to improve recognition and respect for the sport in Europe and all female participants in basketball.
