On July 14, during the OstchemU20 European Championship Women in Sopron, the first ever Women’s Basketball Congress was held.
A total of 43 participants from 27 countries attended the congress. Women’s basketball specialists from small countries such as Iceland and Denmark were present, but also Spain, France, Turkey and Italy were represented.
Ivan Boydrogvary, President of the FIBA Europe Women’s Commission and Kosta Iliev, Sports Director of FIBA Europe officially opened the congress.
The morning session of the congress consisted of a presentation by Jean Pierre Siutat, President of the French Women’s league, on the analysis and results from the women’s basketball questionnaire that has been sent to all national federations. Important topics such as league schedules, special (opening) events, WNBA, player contracts, agents and uniforms were discussed.

After lunch the topic was the Year of Women’s Basketball. After a short presentation by Project Manager Esther Wender, the participants were divided into five groups for a workshop.
All groups were presented with six questions related to the Year of Women’s Basketball and asked how the project can help improve the image and of women’s basketball in Europe. The group leaders, all members of the FIBA Women’s Commission presented the outcomes of their group to everybody.
The importance of sharing experiences and building a women’s basketball network were some of the remarks the participants made after the congress. They expressed their desire to have women’s basketball congresses several times a year as they see the inaugural congress as a very good first step that deserves and needs to be followed up.
