Stakeholders Meet on “Racism and Ethnic Discrimination in Sport”

22 February 2010

On the 18th and 19th February, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) hosted a meeting in its headquarters in Vienna, Austria, to discuss its upcoming report on racism and ethnic discrimination in sport.

The meeting brought together representatives from international sporting organisations such as UEFA, FIBA Europe, the European Athletics Association (EAA) and the European Olympic Committees, members of national sporting organisations and delegates from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.

FIBA Europe was represented in the conference by its Secretary General Nar Zanolin.

The participants discussed the report's draft recommendations and suggested ways in which the recommendations should be prioritised and implemented.

"It was a fruitful meeting. It was an opportunity to discuss the dangers of discrimination in all types of sporting activities," commented Zanolin. "FIBA Europe is committed in playing a key role in the fight against racism and discrimination in sport."

The report, ‘Racism and Ethnic Discrimination in Sport and Positive Initiatives to Combat It' will be released by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights later in the year. The Agency will also publish a handbook containing examples of good practices in the area of combating racism and ethnic discrimination in sport.

For further information or to request a copy of the report or the handbook in advance please contact the FRA media team: E-mail: media@fra.europa.eu. Tel.: +43 1 58 030 - 642

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights has three key functions: to provide evidence-based advice to the EU and its Member States; to collect information and data on fundamental rights; and to promote a dialogue with the civil society in order to raise public awareness of fundamental rights.
