Greek star Theo Papaloukas received his custom-designed 2006 FIBA Europe Player of the Year award on 30 June among a standing ovation from the appreciating crowd of Athens’ OAKA, the Olympic Sport Complex Arena.
Later Papaloukas proved why he won the award by leading his 2005 EuroBasket champions Greek team to victory over a European All-Star selection in the bi-annual Eurostar game.
Papaloukas followed his gold medal in the 2005 EuroBasket with a stellar 2006 season, highlighted by his performance at the FIBA World Championship in Japan.
The 2.00 m guard played a prominent role in Greece’s upset win over the United States in the semi-finals as he dished out 12 assists.
As a result of his overall play, Papaloukas won the 2006 FIBA Europe Player of the Year, which was determined by a fibaeurope.com fan vote (weighted to account for 30% of the total vote) and an expert panel (weighted to account for 70% of the total vote).
