FIBA Europe will not only be well represented by teams at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, but also by officials.

17 of the 40 officials nominated to oversee games in the first round of the tournament come from Europe, giving the old continent the biggest representation in Spain.

Out of the 17 delegates, six will be officiating at their third consecutive World Cup, whilst for another four, 2014 marks their second appearance on the biggest international basketball stage.

Carl Jungebrand, from Finland, who officiated at the previous two editions of the World Cup, and is now FIBA Head of Refereesing, will also be the Head of Supervisors in Spain.

Additionally, Costas Rigas of Greece has been nominated as a referee supervisor whilst two of the four commissioners - Krzysztof Koralewski of Poland and Reuven Virovnik of Israel - are European.

All three are no strangers to the competition, having acted in the same role in Turkey four years ago.

The World Cup will begin in Spain on 30th August and come to a conclusion in Madrid on 14th September."It is fantastic that the quality of officiating in Europe has been recognised with such a strong presence in Spain by our officials," said FIBA Europe Head of Competition & Referees Department Richard Stokes.

"Although we have invested a lot of resources into projects that touch all levels of officiating, this is a great honour and reward for these officials who have worked so hard to be amongst the best in the world and reflects the massive commitment of all the officials who aspire to perform at this level of competition."
