|Participants in the 2013 Ireland National Referees Conference|
FIBA Europe's Referee Department continues to support its member federations with the provision of clinicians and speakers at a wide range of clinics and conferences for officials.
One of the most recent to be supported was the Basketball Ireland National Referees Conference, held in the Institute of Technology Carlow, with over 70 officials attending who officiate in both local and national competitions.
The NRC Conference Tournament also continued this year, providing officials an opportunity to showcase their talent as well as ensuring the national assessors were able to work on their consistency, approach and message for the season ahead.
The Keynote Speaker, provided by FIBA Europe, was Wil Jones from Wales. Bringing a wealth of experience to the Irish association from both on and off the floor, Jones not only lead discussions for the referees, but also participated in the assessor's workshops.
Other speakers at the event included Geraldine O'Neill from the Irish Table Officials Association, whose talk focused on how the officials as a team can improve their working relationship in national competitions.
Former senior referee for the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and current Chairman of the Referees Association, Pat McEnenaey, focused on the commitment, dedication and sacrifices needed to achieve full potential as officials.
Jones' presentations across the weekend included talks on standards of good officiating, mechanics, pre-game and good communication. Ensuring something for everyone, Jones also held sessions for non-national league officials. Jones' enthusiastic and positive encouragement of officials was noted by all throughout the weekend, particularly during tournament games where direct feedback and advice was given in post-game debriefing sessions.
