Constant progression is not only one of the goals when it comes to basketball players and coaches.
It is vital to officiating as well. Improving on all levels means improving the game of basketball itself.
All the hard work during the regular season pays off in the summer. Players, coaches and referees dream of taking part in continental as well as intercontinental championships and getting to the gold medal games.
It's a combination of reward, honour, recognition and trust for a referee to be nominated for international national team's competitions, representing the referee body. Officiating in the final is the cherry on top.
In the past years, a great number of European referees featured in intercontinental championships.
The quality of refereeing is so high on the old continent that it's not unusual to see the referees in clashes for medals, no matter what the event.
With Juan Carlos Arteaga of Spain and Italy's Luigi Lamonica, two European referees were part of the 2010 FIBA World Championship final.
In 2012, European officiating is recognized one more time, as a number of European referees are nominated for the second edition of the U17 World Championship, Men and Women, as well as the Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men and Women.
A total of 39 commissioners, referee supervisors and referees will represent Europe at the four respective championships, starting in June.
"All of them work at high-level games in the domestic competitions of their respective countries, progressing continuously. Most of them already gained experience on the international scene. The nominations for this year's summer events prove once again their top quality," says Richard Stokes, Head of FIBA Europe Competitions and Referee Department.
The support and training from the FIBA Europe Referee Department is one of the keys to their success. The FIBA Europe Referee Department supports the national federations, providing them with teaching material and expertise.
This is reinforced at European competitions such as both EuroBasket tournaments as well as in the youth competitions.

"The Clinic for Instructors and Potential Referees held yearly in Gran Canaria is only one example of FIBA Europe's effort of developing officiating and bringing it to a high level, but this is where we start with the young referees. Now, many of those who have been through this programme are now officiating on the world stage", explains Miguel Betancor, FIBA Europe Head of Operations.
"Technology such as the Observer software as well as the Digital ScoreSheet software also help to improve the knowledge and decision-making of the referees."
