The Belgian city of Antwerp was characterised by basketball over the weekend, with a record-breaking ‘Night of the Giants' being followed up by a successful clinic for referees and commissioners.
The Belgian National Department of Referees (NDR) invited Richard Stokes, Head of the FIBA Europe Referee Department, to attend the Ethias League game between Port of Antwerp Giants and BC Telenet Oostende on 4 April.
A record 17,000 fans in Antwerp Sportpaleis witnessed a narrow 91-93 overtime loss by their team on a night that served as further promotion for Belgian basketball.
Stokes made use of the game to present FIBA Europe's observer software to Belgian referee instructors Johnny Jacobs and Patrick Flament, with the video material being reviewed at the referee clinic the following day.
65 people were invited to the clinic, including all referees and commissioners of the Belgian Ethias League and the national referees of the Belgian Development League, with Stokes sharing his expertise in various presentations.
The main topics touched were three-person officiating, game management, communication and conflict handling.
The participants seized the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and appreciated the clinic as a good preparation for the upcoming play-off games.
