FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel visited Ukraine on Tuesday to discuss EuroBasket 2017 with leading governmental officials.

Demirel was received in Kyiv by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, and President of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation Sasha Volkov and Secretary General Sasha Larin.

The FIBA Europe President was in Kyiv to discuss the agreement regarding Ukraine's hosting of EuroBasket 2017, following the Board of FIBA Europe's decision last month to relocate EuroBasket 2015 on account of the current security issues in Ukraine. Demirel received guarantees from the Ukrainian government regarding the construction of arenas and the event's overall success.

President Poroshensko expressed his gratitude for the proposal to give Ukraine a chance to host EuroBasket 2017, as well as for the support people throughout the world have shown Ukraine.

"I am confident that EuroBasket 2017 will be a force for unity throughout Ukraine and that support for the Ukrainian national team, which has enjoyed great success in recent years, will bring the people of this country together," Demirel said.
