Slovenia Open Captivates Ljubljana

The Men's Slovenia Open final was the first of big games on offer on day two of the 1st FIBA Europe 3on3 in Prešernov Square, in downtown Ljubljana.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, team 'Indijanci' had beaten 'PST' 15-9, while '' had prevailed over 'Žwali', 15-12, to set up the national competition final.

The big game proved a thriling affair, worthy of the high level of competition the enormous crowds that inundated the center of the Slovene capital had enjoyed throughout the two days of the 1st FIBA Europe 3on3.

'Indijanci' fought hard till the end to do justice to their name (it means Indians in Slovene) but, after a fascinating battle in overtime, '' managed to prevail 16-14 to win the trophy and domestic bragging rights.

The eventual champions lost a player through injury almost immediately after the start of the game, but tied the score at 14:14 just seven seconds before the end of regulation, thanks to a basket by Simon Finžgar.

Simon Finžgar then gave his team the lead in overtime with a spectacular dunk, for Peter Vujovič to score the winning point and turn '' into the 2011 Slovenia Open champions among enormous cheers by the 2,000-strong crowd that almost brought down the three bridges that surround Prešernov Square!

A total of 24 teams participated in the Slovenia Open, with 120 players taking to the court over the course of the two days.
