|If the basketball tradition of Catalonia is anything to go by, don't be surprised if you see the next Juan Carlos Navarro or Pau Gasol on the FIBA Europe 3on3 courts this week|
It would be difficult to overstate the prominence that the region of Catalonia, in north-eastern Spain, has within the European basketball world.
The Most Valuable Players in the last two EuroBaskets, Juan Carlos Navarro and Pau Gasol, were born in the region.
Then there is the other Gasol, Marc, and legendary players like Jordi Villacampa or rising stars like Ricky Rubio who are also Catalonians.
The great Juan Antonio San Epifanio, who does not hail from the region but spent his entire professional career there, was chosen to light the flame in the Barcelona Olympics.
And, of course, Catalonia is home to the historical Joventut Badalona and the world-renowned FC Barcelona, who have both won Euroleague titles at club level.
Now the FIBA Europe 3on3 arrives in Catalonia for a six-day long tour, in way of a small recognition to the region and its connection with basketball.
The FIBA Europe crew is spending the entire day Tuesday to set up four 3on3 courts in the Plaça dels Països Catalans of Badalona.
That square will be the first stop of the Tour, on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 July.
The first day of action will kick-off at 10am with an open competition for school children and various basketball camps, and at 5pm the regular competition will commence.
After Badalona, the set up will move to the maritime passage of Calafell, in Port de Segur de Calafell, for an entire day of fun on Saturday 21 July, which will include the Europe-wide famous FIBA Europe 3on3 dunk and three-point shooting contests.
The last stop is the capital of the autonomous region, Barcelona, with two days of games on 23 and 24 July at the Olympic Port.
The tour coincides with the London Olympics warm-up tournament which takes place in Barcelona with the participation of Team USA, Argentina and hosts Spain.
The 3on3 Tour of Catalonia is organised in collaboration with the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) and the Basketball Federation of Catalonia (FCBQ) and in conjunction with the 3x3 ProTour of the FEB.
