On June 17, in an unprecedented event for European basketball, 31,004 people gathered in the seven cities which will host EuroBasket 2009 in order to beat the Guiness World Record in dribbling a basketball simultaneously in different places. The event was staged by the Polish Basketball Federation and the Local Organising Committees of EuroBasket 2009 and was broadcast live by the public broadcaster TVP. You can watch how it was covered in this video. Images are courtesy of TVP.

There weren't too many tears shed for Italy when they blew a double-digit lead in the second half and lost to Greece in their crunch fifth-place battle at the EuroBasket Women on June 20.

How could any neutral not smile at the sight of the Greeks doing a dance on the court after that 60-56 victory that catapulted Evina Maltsi and Co into the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women and the EuroBasket Women 2011 in Poland?

Warning: Do not visit Latvia unless you are prepared to return home exhausted and needing match-sticks to keep your eyelids open.

That's how I felt when I got off the plane in England from Riga and drove home on Sunday.

With the draw for the three main European basketball competitions scheduled for next week in Berlin the teams who will be participating have been named.

FIBA Europe's new competition EuroChallenge (formerly EuroCup) will feature eight teams who will qualify directly to the first qualifying round.  That list includes 2008 EuroCup finalists Dexia Mons-Hainaut of Belgium and Italian side Virtus Bologna.

32 more teams will compete in two elimination rounds with eight eventually advancing to the first qualifying round.  2008 EuroCup Final Four hosts Proteas EKA AEL are among those teams as are Croatians KK Zagreb, Russians CSK-VVS Samara and Spartak St. Petersburg and a pair of French teams in Vichy and Toulon.

The remainder of the teams competing in EuroChallenge will be made up of the losing sides in the two elimination rounds of EuroCup (formerly ULEB Cup).

The draw, to be held at the Postbahnhof in Berlin, Germany, will begin at 12:00 CET with the Euroleague draw.  After a short break the proceedings will continue with the draw for the EuroCup elimination round, followed by the main draw for EuroCup.  The final competition to be drawn will be EuroChallenge, scheduled to begin at 16:30.

The winner and runner-up of EuroChallenge will earn the right to play in the EuroCup next season while the winner of that competition will gain a coveted spot in Euroleague.
