Year after year, the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia has come close to booking a place at the EuroBasket only to fall short.

Now, the Balkan country have their best-ever chance of reaching next year's Final Round in Poland after shooting to the top of Group B in Division A with Saturday's 80-78 home win over Latvia.

What a Saturday evening that was... Israel, Lithuania, Serbia and Hungary added their names to the nine team-roster qualified for EuroBasket 2009 in Latvia. Turkey, Poland, France, Slovakia and Greece had already secured their qualifications.

The most exciting situation was between Ukraine and Hungary. Fegyverneky and her team-mates finally booked the last ticket, as the best third place team.

American college basketball star Nick Calathes was immensely proud to represent Greece, the country of his late grandfather, at this summer's U20 European Championship in Latvia.

Calathes, who travelled to Europe following a dazzling first season with the Florida Gators, played almost 22 minutes per game for the Greeks in Riga and averaged 11.2 points, 3.7 assists and 3.5 rebounds.

The names of nine lucky basketball fans who won authentic, autographed game jerseys, worn by some of the stars of EuroBasket 2007, were announced by FIBA Europe this week.

The winners were picked from among the 16,000 fans who cast their votes online for the FIBA Europe Player of the Year awards 2007.
